Rodney McLain of Poteet High School is the 2020-21 Dallas Cowboys Whataburger Coach of the Year. In 2020, McLain led Poteet to an 8-3 record, a three-win improvement from McLain’s first year in 2019.
McLain is one of 32 nominees in the running for the prestigious Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.

Two finalists will be selected and a winner will be announced this summer. Nike, a presenting partner, and the NFL Foundation will award $12,500 to the Don Shula Award winner while the associated High School football program will be awarded $17,500. The second finalist will receive $7,500 while the associated High School football program will be awarded $12,500. In addition, the other 30 finalists will receive $1,000 each.

Over the course of the 2020 high school football season, the Dallas Cowboys and Whataburger recognized 12 local coaches making an impact on their team, school and community. As part of their recognition, each coach received a $2,000 grant courtesy of Whataburger and the Gene and Jerry Jones Family Foundation for his football program.

The 2020 season marked the 26th year the Dallas Cowboys honored high school football coaches with the Coach of the Week program. The program spans the length of the high school football season and is designed to aid and promote high school football and the development of youth football. The goal of the Coach of the Week program is to give high school football coaches the recognition they deserve and provide schools financial assistance to maintain and upgrade their football programs. Over the life of the program, the Coach of the Week program has provided more than 265 grants totaling more than $425,000 to area football programs.
